Major Carbide Problems with the New Nokia N97 Plugin

Two days ago on July 2nd, 2009, Nokia released a new plugin for Carbide that supported features on the Nokia N97. However, some themers, including myself, have become victimized by the sieges of unexpected errors after installing this seamlessly innocent plugin. From my experiences, once you have installed the Nokia N97 plugin, your 5th Edition plugin will be automatically deleted. Any theme projects you have made containing 5th edition elements will suffer major errors, and Carbide will automatically open the theme project with another plugin (in my case, the Nokia E75 plugin). At this point, all your 5th edition elements would have been deleted!

From this screenshot, it shows that the 5th Edition plugin is no longer present.

Fortunately, I never saved during this plugin transition process. Although my 5th edition elements are still present within the theme, they are not viewable.

An unclassified random error in regards to opening themes with 5th Edition elements.

The only way I was able to salvage my 5th Edition files was to:

  • Close all theme projects and restart Nokia Carbide
  • Download and re-install the 5th Edition Plugin
  • Open my 5th Edition theme project
  • Change the plugin from 5th Edition to N97
  • Save the theme as a N97 theme

I cannot confirm if this process losses any 5th edition element – or if this process will allow correct packaging and installation of the theme.

I personally caution all themers who create or plan to create themes for S60 5th Edition – Stay away from the Nokia N97 plugin until further notice from Forum Nokia!
