Nokia Provides Insight Behind Icon Designing

Nokia designer Rob Williams the approach Nokia took to creating beautiful yet simple “Ovi” icon set. This set has already made its way to a number of devices including the Nokia 5800, the Nokia E75, and the Nokia N97. Nokia wanted their icons to be universally recognized, like a global language that everyone understands. In this video, Rob provides some the stories behind the design of the music, games and navigation icons.

I must agree when Rob and Nokia say that, “The best icons instinctively recognized and appear invisible to our daily lives.” However, this proves to increase the challenge of icon making even further. How does one attempt to push their designs to another creative level, yet at the same time remain simple and recognizable? This is the challenge that all designers face everyday.
