Nokia Trademarks a “C” and “X” Series – Will This Mark The End of the N Series?

On July 18th, several websites have reported Nokia’s trademark for a “C Series” line of devices. Today, Finnish site Digitoday has reported another trademark of an “X Series”. Details of each series are still unknown, as Nokia has yet to provide any information to the public.

What exactly do the “C” and “X” acronyms stand for?
Certainly the “C” could not represent “Communication”, as this appears to be a strong aspect of all Nokia devices. Could the “C series” be a line of camera-focused devices?

As for “X”, my best guess would be a line of “Xpress Music” devices, which feature a line of music based devices.

If these theories are true, does that mean that Nokia is splitting up the beloved multi-functional N series? If so, I believe this might be a step in the right direction.

The N series devices have always been featured packed. However, only a handful of these devices have managed to execute their functions well. The Nokia N82 is still arguably has the best camera on a Nokia device – possibly on all mobile devices. The rather dated Nokia N91 still has the best music playback of all the N series phones. Why hasn’t Nokia implemented the Xenon flash of the N82 and the music drivers of the N91 into an all-in-one media orientated eNtertainment based device?

This seems to be a recurring issue, which is questioned every time Nokia releases a device. Even the highly anticipated Nokia N97 fell victim to these criticisms.

If Nokia decides to hone their finest attributes into series of functionally specified devices, perhaps the criticisms will finally come to an end. And Nokia fans and rejoice and love their “X” or “C” series devices without the “if only it had…” feeling.
