I am opening this thread hoping that it will help our members here at MMC in creating their art pieces.
I will start with a disclaimer.
I am no pro in Photoshop and all that I am sharing now are the results of reading hundreds of tutorials (thanks to all that created them).
I decided that instead of linking members to other sites that we should have our own here.
Before starting, I am making a request to the skilled MMC members to share their tutorials here too.

Just take a look at this picture above, (nice huh?) but I'm sure that you could do one the same maybe even better.
All you need is a legal copy of Photoshop and some patience to read this tutorial.

Step 1

Open a new file, I prefer 500x100 and white background when doing this panes because they can be easily resized.
Posted Image

Step 2

Go to Layer>New layer or simply push the button in layers window.
Posted Image

I choose to make this panes rounded rectangles for the simply reason that I love Vista (looks way to cool).
So lets choose rounded rectangular tool from the tools window, or by pressing U on the keyboard.
One thing that have learned is that keyboard shortcuts makes the work a lot easier.
Before starting to make the shape, there are few settings to make.
The original background (that will be deleted after all it's finished) is white so we will have to choose a different color, I choose red.
Posted Image
Choosing the rounded rectangular tool opens us a few options
First one would be Fill Pixels, the second Radius (rounded circle value) and opacity.
You can play how much you want with radius and opacity but for this project fill pixels is a MUST
so lets draw our shape.
Posted Image
I prefer to go as close as possible to the edges but still not altering the rounded corners.
Make a few tries, if you don't like it you can always undo it with Edit>Undo.

Step 3

Make a new layer (that would be number 3 by now).
I told you that I love Vista and Vista has that glossy effect on all the buttons so I wouldn't miss not doing something similar to this pane.
Choose your Rectangular Marque Tool from tools window or by pressing M.
Posted Image
Very important when using the RMT for gloss effect is that feather must be set to 0.
Increasing the value makes the edges more softer and we don't want that now.
Make a selection form the top of the image to almost half of it.

Posted Image
Like that.
Choose gradient tool from window tool or by pressing G..
Make sure that you have default foreground color is white, this is very important being the only color that can achieve you the glossy effect.
Take gradient tool and drag from the top to the end of the shape you have drawn with marque tool.
Go to select>deselect and the result should be smooth like this.

Posted Image

Step 4

Read very carefully here, this being the trickiest part with this glossy effect.
Click on layer 2 (the one with red shape) press CTRL and while holding it click again on it.
It will make a selection like this one.
Posted Image
Go to Select>modify>contract and enter 2 (try first with 1 maybe you like it more).

Now click on layer 3 (the one with gloss effect)
Go to Select>inverse
After, hold CTRL and hit delete few time to get rid of the white.
It will end up looking like this.
Posted Image

Normally that should be all for today but this is too simple, so I thought I would add more color to it.
Choose layer 2 and double click on it.
A new window appears with blending options.
Do not touch nothing and go to gradient overlay.
Posted Image
Choose your gradient, give it a few tries. You will find one you like. If not, go hunting over the net
There a lot of gradients, brushes and styles out there (may Google may be with you B) )
Posted Image
Better now.

Step 5

Simon always loved the shapes that I have in my panes so I won't end without adding one.
Add a new layer.
Choose brush tool by pressing B and choose one from the right window (told you that you will need a lot of those B) ) and use it.
After that, double click on the new added layer and repeat the settings for layer 2 (with gradient only that this time you will untickle the reverse box for colors to be opposed).
Click on layer 4 and simply drag it under layer 3 (this way gloss effect covers it).
That's all folks for tonight.
And remember there is nothing hard to do. :P

Anyone know of other PC apps other than Photoshop that can produce similar results?

(Not windows paint or paint.net either please B) )

Hey, I just dragged a cursor over that entire post and copy and pasted it into a Word document, expecting to only capture the text. To my surprise, Word accessed the net and also downloaded all the pics too. I didn't know it could do that.

Cool, got it all stored offline. Thanks again Danut. I'm off to practice.

Fonzi,
I have a freeware program which came with a canon scanner which does the same thing as photoshop,
it's called photostudio 5

Danut, a couple of important questions.

1. You say you start with a WHITE panel as the background - should that be a TRANSPARENT background ?
If I use white, I end up with white all around the borders.

2. In STEP 4

"Go to Select>modify>contract and enter 2 (try first with 1 maybe you like it more)
now click on layer 3(the one with gloss effect)
Go to Select>inverse
after hold CTRL and hit delete few time to get rid of the white
it will end up looking like this"

I just click on EDIT and CUT. Is that the same thing ? It seems to work.

Other than that, it's brilliant. :nuke: . Whoops, I meant :woot:

At a guess I would say Gimp, haven't used it much myself but their are loads of tutorials and stuff out there, and it's free. . If I recall, some nifty custom text options as well.

guys why don't you use inkscape.
its a opensource software & have capabilities like coreldraw. :)

FYI
80% most popular themers use inkscape instead of coreldraw or adobe illustrator.

best regards,
Ok, thanks Dhanusaud. Can I ask for some more info please.

Q1.can Inkscape make a panel like that ?
Q2. are there lots of add-ons, like brushes and patterns etc, for Inkscape ?
Since Danut put me onto Photoshop a few days ago, I have downloaded enormous libraries of brushes and shapes and patters.
Q3. can you do a tutorial like Danut's using Inkscape and post it here ? I would love to see it.

Q4. My problem, from the couple of times I have used Inkscape, is that when it saves things as an SVG file, I can never see a thumbnail of it - just the SVG trademark icon. How do you work around that ?
With Photoshop, it saves files as a PSD, but I can also save as a PNG file, so I can see a thumbnail preview. With Inkscape, I cannot also save the file as something I can see a preview thumbnail of.

Regards.
Si

like i said in the entry of my first post i am encouraging any member here at mmc forums that is using any graphic making program to write their own tutorial
we will soon have a section only for that and like DHS said not all use photoshop
important is not the program itself but the method that takes to the result
so if you are using inskape, draw, gimp, photoshop illustrator or any kind of program (freeware or not) feel free to do it
sincerely i am using photoshop because i got used with it and to convert in svg i am using illustrator
maybe it's more complicated but like i said this is my method

@si
sorry but I replied "the light" for the CorelDraw topic.
anyway I am answering to your questions.

Q1.can Inkscape make a panel like that ?
Yes, if you have designing skills..you can do it

Q2. are there lots of add-ons, like brushes and patterns etc, for Inkscape ?
No, there aren't. Inkscape is mixed [CorelDraw+Adobe Illustrator] type software, so you can make anything without any add-ons.

Q3. can you do a tutorial like Danut's using Inkscape and post it here ? I would love to see it.
yes, I will be soon working on it.

Q4. My problem, from the couple of times I have used Inkscape, is that when it saves things as an SVG file, I can never see a thumbnail of it - just the SVG trademark icon. How do you work around that ?
Use Adobe Bridge to view SVG's thumbnails.

With Photoshop, it saves files as a PSD, but I can also save as a PNG file, so I can see a thumbnail preview. With Inkscape, I cannot also save the file as something I can see a preview thumbnail of.
You can save SVG to PNG in inkscape.
To do this Click on File Menu-Export to Bitmap
The image exported will be PNG

Hope it is clear with you mate. :)

Best regards,
DHS

many many thanks for the very complete answer, Dhanusaud. That is a big help.
I have taken notes. Especially that bit about thumbnails.

You have kindly put a lot of SVG files in the forums - clocks etc, and I have downloaded but could never see what there were. Now I shall try again.

Big thanks.

@si
thanks a lot pal, hope it will go better & better in themeing :)

@light
its your understanding pal. If I say all graphic applications are hard to understand. Designing is not a micky mouse game. If you don't use & try thus it will be hard and will go harder & harder. :P

It depends on you that what you like. If you think Adobe Illustrator & INKSCAPE are harder applications & never give a try as well as practices then it will be always tuff. If you know CorelDraw then I don't think that INKSCAPE is going hard for you.

Best regards,
DHS

Well I've done it. I've made my first theme using all Photoshop stuff.

Thanks again Danut (and Dhanusaud and everyone else) for your inspiration and guidance.
Danut, if you hadn't posted this, I don't think I would ever have started on this. Many thanks.
