How can i make a nice car theme. It is very hard becasue most car pictures have a larger width and smaller height so how would i be able to crop the image into a nice backround picture (240 x 320 pixels) for the sony ericsson w580i

You can use any of the photo editing program
there are many for this purpose
you can crop it to the desired size and then do whatever you want to do

Thank you. I already use adobe photoshop but when i crop the image it does not fit the car and the only way to fit it is to rotate the image. But i dont like it on my phone when the image is rotated

There are various ways to change a wallpaper image depending on what you are using, I have to to this a lot so it looks OK at 240*320 and 320*240.

Haven't not seen your image,don't know the size or background,so I am guessing.
Using your original image, the larger and un-cropped one,
crop the width only to the width of the car,or how you want it [width-wise] on your phone, resize it to 240 wide,never mind height, keep proportions/ratio correct.

Now have a look at the resulting height, if it's larger than 320, make a new document 240*320 and paste your image in, depending on how much larger your height is, move it up or down to fit.

If its smaller than 320, you have to pad it out, how you do this depends on what is in the background, if it's just plain colour for example, just paste your image into a 240*320 document the same colour.
If its sky/scenery etc, it's a bit more difficult, sometimes I just paste a few copies in and move each one up/down in increments then blend/smudge the background together, or use the clone tool,or you can cut the car out of your picture and put it in a plain or other background.

There are different things to try, and really it depends on what you are starting with.

If you want you can post the picture, although no guarantees on what I come out with

RobJM has some great advice. In addition I can tell you that if you make a standby softkey and a standby status bar they will cover up the bottom 30 pix and the top 24 pix of your standby screen respectively. These are areas that you could fill with any thing, it may help you to get to your goal.
